Well, after my PeerTube miniseries I will write about what it's like to self-host with the help of #YunoHost. It's very very easy to do (including updating / maintaining things). I'm self-hosting Friendica, GoToSocial and Pixelfed thanks to YunoHost.
My self-hosted Ghost blog is on another VPS and a whole different story - pure command line prompts for that one. Trickier but very satisfying 🤗

Today I'm filled with gratitude as I think back about all the ways I have changed - and become more empowered - since I installed @yunohost on my VPS on December 17, 2024.
The biggest difference is my state of mind. For example, yesterday I started using #PeerTube, after setting up an account on the instance MakerTube. I am enjoying it IMMENSELY. I uploaded a couple of my videos there but then immediately thought: I should set up my own instance!
If you had told me 4 months ago that one day I would be a couple of clicks away from setting up my own PeerTube, I would have thought you were hallucinating. But #YunoHost has given me this power and confidence – for which I am infinitely grateful.
Since early February 2025 I have also gotten a bit of experience installing things on a separate VPS with command lines. Even if my self-hosted Ghost blog has given me lemons so far (Mastodon Hug of Death, you're to blame for this!) I am undeterred. I will try tweaking my NGINX settings next week, to set up a reverse proxy and increase my cache. Or heck, I could block Mastodon preview card requests and all my problems would go away. (If someone knows how to do that, please let me know!)
100 days of self-hosting, wow! I feel like a completely different person. Digital sovereignty rocks.
What are my goals for the next 100 days?
1) solving my self-hosted Ghost blog troubles
2) getting an education in caching, reverse proxies and the like
3) setting up my PeerTube instance

I’ve done some improvements to my LEGO office, adding plants and film/photography equipment to the roof. Plus better support for the #YunoHost sticker on the computer monitor.
OK not exactly realistic because… no shelter from the elements, but I’m experiencing a bricks shortage due to the construction of an airport and a pizzeria for my 4-year-old 😅

Hello #Fediverse and Happy New Year!
I'd like to mark the start of 2025 with the first message from my self-hosted instance. You may already know me as @_elena@mastodon.social. Well, now I also run my own #ActivityPub microblogging server, thanks to the magic of #YunoHost and #GoToSocial (and #Phanpy, which I'm using to compose this).
I registered this domain – aseachange.com – a looooong time ago but never did anything with it. It was the very first domain name I ever bought, even before securing elenarossini.com (!!!). It was so long ago, but I remember I was inspired by Beck's album Sea Change. seachange[dot]com was taken, so I grabbed Aseachange.
I absolutely love its meaning of profound transformation and I think it's PERFECT for my self-hosted #Fediverse instance and what it represents: independence, empowerment and digital sovereignty.
Ever since setting it up, I've been feeling joyful and hopeful. Everytime I look at myself in the mirror, I think: I'm in control of my own social media platform. And it feels SOOO GOOD.
What do I have in store for 2025? I plan to use this account to post messages about #selfhosting, learning #Linux, privacy and digital sovereignty.
I will also keep posting from my Mastodon account because you don't give a Lamborghini to someone who just passed their driver's license. I barely know what I'm doing here, so I feel a lot safer (for now) keeping my mastodon.social account as well... In case anything goes wrong here. Better safe than sorry!
So, this is my #Introduction and if you've read as far as here I just want to thank the Fediverse for being so amazing and allowing me to connect with people on my own terms. And thank you Fedi people for being so generous and supportive with your superb advice and kind words.
This is a really magical, special place.

I started the week in the best possible way: lunch with two @yunohost team members. I was trying hard not to fangirl too much 🤗
I thanked them profusely for their incredible work, empowering us all with the tools to self-host. It's thanks to #YunoHost that I have my own #Pixelfed, #GoToSocial and #Friendica accounts. I hope I'll be able to give back one day.

I see that #GoToSocial has an update available but I'm too scared to upgrade it. Having my 4th cup of espresso and working up the courage to do it (I hear it takes a looong time). Hoping I don't break anything 😅
In other news, I am LOVING my #LinkStack and having a glimpse into the links that are the most popular (LinkStack offers you a ranking in reverse order of the most clicked links when you log into their dashboard). I have never felt more empowered, tech-wise, than in the past two months. I set up my own #GoToSocial, #Pixelfed and #Friendica instances. Seeing the label "admin" next to my name always makes me smile.
Today I will sign up for a 2nd VPS (that runs on Ubuntu) and manually install #Ghost. Wish me luck!

I just spent a week looking after my sick child (we thought she had stomach flu, turns out it was influenza type B). My little one has now fully recovered and we had our second night of real, uninterrupted sleep. So happy!
I thought I’d share something amusing with you. So last night after she fell asleep I finally had some « me time ». What did I do?
I checked my VPS host’s plans page to see how much an upgrade would cost…and then my « self care » / moment of relaxation was browsing #YunoHost’s applications page, daydreaming about what I could I try next.
This is genuinely the stuff that lifts me up. I’m in deep 😅😂
This has become a #YunoHost unofficial fan account. Look at all the apps they empower me to self-host!
For the record, I installed YunoHost on my VPS on December 17th, so it’s been less than 2 months. And I’ve already run (and survived) app updates.
Next week I get to meet the team in Paris - thrilled at the opportunity to thank them IRL 🤗

When I booked my train for #FOSDEM in November I was intimidated: will I feel like a fish out of water, since I'm not a developer?
Around that time @ilja recommended I check out @yunohost.
On Dec 17 I signed up for a VPS, installed #YunoHost and in the span of a month I'm now running:
1) a #GoToSocial instance @elena
2) my own #Pixelfed @ele
3) a #LinkStack
4) a #Ghost blog (upcoming)
So I'm a little less intimidated (but still a newbie).
Excited to connect with so many familiar faces 😊
When I purchased the URL https://elena.social I didn't know what I would end up doing with it.
I thought of grabbing the URL so that years down the line, when I knew Linux a bit better, I could self-host a Fediverse project on it.
Well, the future is now.
I found the PERFECT use for it: a landing page with all my links powered by #LinkStack (an open source alternative to LinkTree).
I installed the app on my VPS in a few clicks thanks to the magic of #YunoHost... and then personalized it in a few minutes. It's really cool.

I'd like to share with you information about my #VPS and resources it's using now that I'm #selfhosting.
Many of you have written in to say you were inspired to try #YunoHost following my toots. That's amazing 💛
So, a month in, I'm now running:
- a #GoToSocial instance: @elena
- my own @phanpy as a web client for it
- a #Pixelfed instance: @ele
My memory usage has shot up to 56% but otherwise resource usage has been pretty light, yay

IT'S ALWAYS DNS 😆
Currently setting up my #Pixelfed instance via #YunoHost. I thought I had messed something up, turned to another task for 30 minutes, checked back, and things were all in order. Awww the joys and pains of DNS propagation 😅
I imagine that @PixelFed's servers are getting overwhelmed by traffic these days.
I'm lucky to already have a pixelfed.social account. Still, in order not to add to @dansup's server load, I am taking the plunge:
this morning I'll try to set up my own #Pixelfed instance, thanks to the magic of #YunoHost (Pixelfed is in their list of apps).

This is what I learned on day 7 of posting from my #GoToSocial account:
GtS caches content by others (aka media that appears on one's feed). This is the reason why my weekly backup has ballooned from 280 MB on Dec 30 to 7.7 GB on January 6.
I posted about this on my Mastodon account and @mario explained the cache issue in this reply: https://hachyderm.io/@mario/113782715282062429 (THANK YOU Mario!)
So what did I do? Easy!
I logged onto my #YunoHost admin panel → Applications → GoToSocial → Config Panel
and I changed the caching length from 7 days (default) to 2 days... which means that at midnight tonight my GtS cache will be cleared of content older than 2 days.
Explanation from GtS: When remote media is removed from the cache, it is deleted from storage but the database entries for the media are kept so that it can be fetched again if requested by a user. If this is set to 0, then media from remote instances will be cached indefinitely.
I hope this helps someone else! (esp. a fellow newbie)

#Selfhosting day 12 - progress update 📰
I'm now running the amazing #Phanpy on my server. I plan to use it as the web client for my #GoToSocial instance.
It was a super easy, 1-click install with #YunoHost. It took maybe 2 minutes to set up (create a subdomain, add app).
ℹ️ Typical resource usage: 10M RAM, 15M disk (so light!)

My husband checks in every once in a while, asking: "what are you up to, geeking out?" and I invariably reply "yes", smiling from ear to ear.

To add an extra layer of difficulty to my #selfhosting journey, there is the issue of scarce free time.
Now I have 20 minutes before I need to cook for my child and then go pick her up from nursery school. Editing DNS records with the clock ticking is not for the faint of heart 😅
If struggling with DNS is a #selfhost rite of passage, I am ready to jump over this hurdle and get to the next!
Jokes aside, I'm super grateful for #YunoHost's crystal clear instructions.
