Some #MastodonTools I use: Mastometrics @mastometrics and Analytodon @analytodon can be useful for those running project or org accounts, for example tracking popular posts and follower growth.

When I came to the #fediverse I didn’t want to be a slave to metrics, likes, etc - and I don’t think that’s the right reason to use a social platform, overall (community, social sharing and conversation are why I’m social).

These tools are not essential, but you *may* find them interesting and useful.

For me, it was a lazy weekend which is exactly what I wanted. Played some video games and just relaxed all weekend.

Today, it's back to work and I'm hoping it's going to be a nice slow day, but I'm afraid it won't be. No meetings today, so just straight work until 8pm EST.

Do any of you use more than one different #fediverse service? And if so, which do you combine, and why?

At first I was considering using just my #mastodon account, as all these services are interconnected on the fediverse anyway. But seing how Pixelfed feels more like Instagram offering similar features, and seing how not all features translate between those two services (i.e. I can't see non-image posts on pixelfed, while mastodon wont show me collections or stories), it just made sense. Also this allows me to separate my more text- or link-based content from my more image-based content. So feel free to join me on Pixelfed. Over there it might feel more personal (as I share what I've done and saw over the day in form of photography), while over here it'll probably be more thoughts and references, based more on what I read and experienced.

Ready to move away from Big Tech?

There are options. Choosing those options will require you to learn something new, but that is a small cost to pay to get away from Big Tech, IMHO

Here are my suggestions. Feel free to add your own:

1. Browser : Vivaldi. That one is a given for me, obviously.

2. Mail client : Vivaldi. You may wonder why you need a mail client, but besides the technical benefits, it makes it a lot easier to move between mail services or even use more than one.

3. Mail service : Fastmail. They have been around for a long time.

4. Office software : Libre Office.

5. Video conference : Whereby.

6. Desktop OS : Linux.

7. Social : Mastodon and the Fediverse in general.

As said, I am eager to hear what you are using to help me move away from Big Tech as well. Always looking for new things to try.

The internet is going backwards.

Doing a web search in 2025 is a nightmare: even if you tell Google/DuckDuckGo to disable AI summaries, most of the top results you get are clearly AI-generated word salads. More than in the past, I am finding myself keeping a curated list of trusted sources, wikis, personal homepages, blogs, microblogs, to fetch information from, rather than relying on search engines. People increasingly host their own stuff, because it has become easier, and digital self sovereignty is being finally seen as something valuable. Archivists scramble to hoard data that might soon disappear. Fediverse means going back from web 2.0 to email, and frankly it's great. Well, we're still being shoved in our throats modern versions of Clippy, but I guess no pain no gain.

Now please bring back BBSs and 56k modems, and the cycle will be complete. I dream of a next era of steampunk utopia where "key exchange" has a very metallic meaning, and steam computers can factorize more than 15.
