Dear @Mastodon can we have a setting for: "automatically hide/collapse all #hashtags except for 3" please?

I really appreciated the recent influx of new photographers (many coming from Instagram I presume) but the excessive hashtag use is getting out of hand. No hard feelings, it's hard to break old habits - but there is NO #algorithm here that needs gaming. Very few main hashtags will suffice. Choose 3 that fit best. Write hashtags for people instead, i.e. #silentsunday #fediverse #photography

I often see posts with more than 30 hashtags, sometimes taking up more space than the actual picture. That's unnecessary keyword stuffing and it's not helping accessibility and screenreaders either. Please use a meaningful ALT-text description instead 🙏

So for the most part, my foray into #Friendica seems to be going well. There are two questions I have though.
First, is it not possible for people who aren't on Friendica, or even #Mastodon, to follow a Friendica profile even if they're not on the Fediverse?
Second, are there any #iOS fedi apps that actually work with Friendica? I tried to set #Metatext up with it, but I keep getting "The operation couldn't be completed." Is that a problem with Metatext or the server I'm on?

Welp, here we are in the midst of the shitzkrieg™ fast-fascism takeover/destruction of America, and wouldn't ya know we don't have any perfect tools for resistance.

Use what works, even if it's not ideal, while we wait/work for better tools.

#Mastodon (and the larger #fediverse) isn't perfect by any means, but it's much better than corporate social media. If you can convince a person to move, that's good.

#bluesky is a bit problematic now, and its structure makes it capturable by a billionaire, a corporation, or even government, but it's not yet corporate or captured. It's better than FB, Twitter, etc. The campaigns to move people off twitter/meta to bsky seem like they will do a decent amount of good.

#signal isn't perfect, but it is easier to use and better known than "more perfect" solutions. Anyone you can shift to signal is a person more secure and contributing less to corporate solutions.

#DirectAction is awesome, far better than my #slacktivism, but even pointing out problems is better than being silent. I'm deeply guilty of not doing enough actual resisting, but I also wish with every bone in my body that my conservative friends/family (and even the non-conservative ones too timid to say anything publicly) would just fucking say something. In public, on FB or insta or whatever. More voices would help.

If you think I'm wrong about this "perfect = enemy of good" approach, I'm open to alternative ideas. Right now this makes sense to me.

I want to run a light #webserver on a VPS to #selfhost my static website. Since it has low traffic and is quite light, I don’t need performance. I’m looking more for stability, security and minimalism. Now I’m quite familiar with #linux but never used #bsd (and I’m willing to learn this OS)

The disruption in air traffic reminds me of the early days when #musk took over #twitter (with disruption and outages). Back then we had the option to migrate to #mastodon #fediverse. I am not sure what's the alternative to flights at this point 🙃

@BeAware That’s where you’re wrong. Again, if you actually read my post, I said honest conversations on controversial or non-controversial topics. Honest, as in cordial. That means not being a dick and not even breaking rules. It is #fediverse admins are the worst about this. If they simply don’t like your opinion, even if the person you are talking to agrees or is having a fine conversation, admins will make false accusations and rules that don’t exist.

At #fosdem @dave of Mastodon dev team presented the next milestone for #Mastodon that will benefit the entire #fediverse

Content is already federated, while search is still confined to the local server. They’re working on search federation through service providers hosting content. #Fediscovery is a project to implement federated search on activitypub federated and decentralised networks. There is already a repository available for the specifications drafts.

Oh, more fun #fedidrama for anyone who cares.

Last night, @dansup (creator of #Pixelfed #Loops #FediDB and more...) began bashing @dumpsterqueer (creator of #GoToSocial) for "faking nodeinfo stats" on #GoToSocial servers.

He had at least three posts about it (screenshots from archive.ph snapshot attached) before deleting them. Two of the three posts were, unsurprisingly if you've kept up with Dan recently, pretty insensitive. Also a bit ironic, as Dan is known to boast from time to time about how much he lifts up other fediverse developers.

Another user pointed out they found an update in the GTS repo that added an option to randomize instance user stats to throw off bots from detecting exactly how many users were on an instance, if the GTS server admin chose to enable it. Apparently a few did, thus prompting Dan's posts when his fedidb.org site started picking up crazy user numbers on these GTS instances.

I don't know if Dan decided to delete his posts after finding this out, or if cooler heads prevailed in the end, but either way his posts are now gone. Just like the entry for GTS on the FediDB (https://fedidb.org/software/gotosocial).

At the time I started writing this, the other major fedi server catalog site #FediverseObserver still had GTS servers listed but had instance user numbers all set to 0. However, looking at it again now, they appear to have delisted GTS servers as well.
