If anyone's interested here is the graph for CPU temperature when my new N100 router was running in the homelab cabinet rack vs when I just put a simple USB desk fan beside it to blow out the heat. A roughly 15C drop so the results will be much better hopefully when I get the proper cooling fans for the cabinet. PS The drop to zero is where I powered it off whilst tidying some other cables near by.

A screenshot of my N100 NUC OPNSense health page showing the CPU temperature graph and a 15C difference drop when a cooling fan was added.

[ It's decided, OPNsense is currently installing over pfSense! ]

So my Intel N100 quad core with 16Gb ram and a 256GB NVME drive and 4 x 2.5Gb ethernet ports has arrived with pfSense preinstalled but I'm thinking I'd be better off with installed instead?
Am I right as this is going to be my main router / firewall ? Feel free to comment and thank you.
No I'm not using anymore sorry.

I've just launched the version of my blog with a BSD-based theme. The main colors are inspired by the BSDs, and badges will appear if a post includes one (or more) BSD in its categories. I've applied a few fixes (there are more to come), but it's already fully usable.
The site is designed to be navigable even without images or JavaScript, and can be used with text-based browsers. The only feature that requires JavaScript is the search function, which runs locally in the user's browser for maximum security and privacy.

For those who have already visited the site in recent days, you might not see the new theme correctly as some CSS parts could still be cached in your browser. I’ve set long expiration times for the CSS, so browsers may not notice the changes right away.

@amoroso beyond all expectations, I installed from source on today.

I was doing a quick test of how much pain it would be to create a port package for

Maiko built on the first try.
I got the runtime via git.
              I got the prebuilt loadups.

After unpacking, I ran the (obsolete) startup script and…it just worked. Medley running under Wayland.

              Was it. Supposed. To work?

A new version is released. If you deal with ProxMox in any form you'd be wise to see what this powerful tool can do for you. When you realize it is one of the tools you've been missing in managing your different VMS in ProxMox rest assured you will be very glad you now know of its existence.

I'm using OpenWRT on an AMD APU4 for my router from the FTTP ONT and the router feeds my home network. But I'm wondering whether to recycle an old Intel i5 PC and fit 2 x 2.5Gb cards and setup pure for my router using pf for firewall and so forth. Or do I go the OpnSense route with a PC ? What would you recommend as I don't mind getting my hands dirty, plus I'm not intimidated by not having a web based setup, CLI is fine if it works. Bottom line is I'm really not feeling OpenWRT.

If you use Jails ( ) or some other virtualisation technology to separate the e.g. MySQL-Server from the Webserver, you often use the tcp/ip setup instead of sockets. The firewall rules need to restrict the access though.

When I launched the project my goal was to create a welcoming, free space for beginners to dive into BSD-based systems and learn at their own pace. I’m a huge fan of free and open-source software, so I naturally gravitated toward Matrix for the chat setup right from the start. But honestly, isn’t always the smoothest ride - especially for newcomers. It can get a bit tricky, and that’s the last thing I want when I’m trying to make people feel at ease. My focus is on helping beginners get comfortable, encouraging them to experiment, and letting them discover the value of (like , , , etc.) for themselves - not throwing them into something that might feel overwhelming.
That’s why I decided to add a Discord server alongside Matrix. It’s just simpler for a lot of people, and I want to meet folks where they’re at. But I’m not a fan of scattered conversations across platforms - it drives me nuts - so I’ve bridged the main channels on Discord and Matrix. That way, we’re all still chatting together, no matter which spot you prefer - simply one thing: !

                                #Poll: are you "dog-fooding" #BSD?

Unlike previous polls (:BlobCatBlush:) I have tried really hard to make sure the options make sense. Select the lowest item in the list that is true for you:

Of the ten options, the first four are for those that don't use BSD regularly (let's say at least once per week).
The fifth option ("VPN/server") is for someone who uses BSD on a server they manage, but don't have physical access to.
The sixth ("at work") through eighth ("secondary laptop/desktop") is for those who regularly use some variant of BSD, but not as a primary daily driver.
The ninth and tenth options are for "dog-fooding"

Oh, right, and I'm sorry, but it really must need be said: MacOS, iOS, and other Apple products do not count. Sorry again. I will count any FOSS BSD-like OSes like #OpenIndiana, though.
I will also count retro commercial Unixes, if you're actually daily-driving them. ;)

                                    Eh...

It's a rolling release, so it's got that going for it, but a lot/most of their custom utilities (such as the package manager) is still on Python 2, which is... not good.

/usr/bin/python is even a symlink to python2 which is really not good.

Small team. Looks like the original dev, who started a new distro, is going to re-work a lot of those things, which will be the basis for Solus going forward, so there's a lot of hope for newer and better utilities.

To be clear, my only real complaint so far is the python2-ness of it.

Also, they don't have a ksh package (which some of my scripts require), but I managed to compile the standard ksh2020.

                                    I don't know if I will stay. #Python2 is kind of a deal-breaker.

Still slowly replicating my #KDE #Plasma setup from my work #Debian box. I have a lot of custom keybinds that make it a little more like i3/sway for me.

My other options are Debian testing, #FreeBSD (probably will lose the ability to run KSP), or #OpenSuSE tumbleweed (if they can ever just enable polkit by default, already).
