Before Wayland, there was X11, the graphical backbone of Linux for over 35 years. Originally developed at MIT in the 1980s, X11 introduced network transparency, allowing applications to run on one machine while displaying on another, a concept ahead of its time. This flexibility made it an essential part of UNIX and later, Linux desktops, powering everything from early X Window Managers to full desktop environments like Xfce, MATE, and KDE.

Despite its age and complexity, X11 remains widely used today, proving that well engineered software can stand the test of time. While Wayland aims to replace it with a modern, secure approach, X11’s legacy continues to shape how we interact with Linux desktops.

awesome: Beastie/Leon McNeill just open sourced their Ultima III colour Macintosh port, all written in Think C!

This is the "Lairware" version that was sold at lairware.com, and received many updates over the years - eventually gaining OS X/Intel 32-bit support. The source appears to be an Xcode project with a mix of think C and cocoa.

          great job, Leon!

I am once again faced with the bleak irony of people who install onto their computer some 5 or 10 apps via FlatPak or Docker, including VSCode, each installed with their own entire copies of Node.js and Electron.js (differing only in their minor revision number), while also complaining about Emacs being “bloated” because it ships with a miniature web browser and fully-featured e-mail client.

@osnews I'm one of those old skool 90s hippies. I miss the days of 5 guys living in a 3 bedroom house near a university and just doing cool shit with computers. Back then you could barely afford a cardboard box coding professionally, but hot damned, was it fun. Now it's just so.....ewww.....

I'd like to mention that the "Open Source" verbiage was a soft-peddling of "Free Software" ideals to corporations from day one (mid-to-late 1990s, IIRC).

What we call #FOSS today was originally for hackers by hackers. Now corporations and deep pockets are involved because it's not "cool" to have linux machine that can't print or run AAA games.

I like printing, and... I'm quite ambivalent towards AAA games, but I like having an OS that runs well.

But we seriously lost something along the way.

P.S., I do not mean to say that the "soft peddling" wasn't done with the very best of intentions. But it is what it is.

Monday morning, which means: backing up my #YunoHost setup.

I see that #GoToSocial has an update available but I'm too scared to upgrade it. Having my 4th cup of espresso and working up the courage to do it (I hear it takes a looong time). Hoping I don't break anything 😅

In other news, I am LOVING my #LinkStack and having a glimpse into the links that are the most popular (LinkStack offers you a ranking in reverse order of the most clicked links when you log into their dashboard). Is anyone interested in me writing about it? For reference, here is what the front end looks like: https://elena.social

Off I go update my #GoToSocial, wish me luck!

What's absolutely HILARIOUS is that I had to put a warning in my NOW page about my radicalization.

Because if you know me IRL but haven't been in touch for a few months, you'd be REALLY surprised about what I'm currently doing (aka EXTREMELY techie things).

To blunt the shock of the transition, I put a little section in there about my @pixelfed photo gallery, because even non-techie people would get that.

In the early 1950s, software wasn’t something you bought, it was shared freely among researchers. IBM and MIT pioneered a culture where programmers exchanged code openly, laying the foundation for the Free Software Movement decades later. The term open source did not exist yet, but the philosophy was already alive.
